"Ask Vic" is published on Monday and Thursday through the offseason.
Mike from Minneapolis, MN
Vic, have you ever considered writing a book, either as a tribute to your memories or to document a specific event? Why or why not?
This is my book, and I write a new chapter every Monday and Thursday during the offseason and, soon, every Monday, Wednesday and Friday during the regular season. Why this way? I was approached by a publishing company to write a book following the Jaguars' 1996 Cinderella season. I met with two of the publishing company's representatives at the Jacksonville airport to discuss arrangements. What I learned is everybody but Vic would get the money. Most of the profits would go to the sales people, including a little extra to the book stores for displaying the book on an eye-level shelf, instead of hiding it way up or way down. Because I wasn't Tom Clancy, I wouldn't be paid an advance. My compensation would be minimal until sales reached a designated level. I thanked them for offering me the opportunity, but I declined. My decision didn't require much thought. I didn't need to see my name on the cover of a book. That's why I'm not going to write a book. I tell all right here and nobody gets the money.

Vic, when a high draft pick/star college QB struggles in the NFL or does not even make a roster after a couple of years, what is usually the primary reason for their lack of success?
He topped out. The NFL is a big step up from college football and he couldn't make it.

What are your thoughts on joint practices?
I like them. They're controlled, so you can create matchups and see players in specific circumstances that'll tell you more about that player than a preseason game might allow.

It's early but any rookie QB on any team catch your eye?
Zach Wilson caught my eye against the Packers. I thought he looked advanced.
Reid from Sherwood, WI
Vic, last year the Packers made changes in staff on special teams and defensive coordinator. How do you think they are doing so far? Anything you see that’s promising or is it too soon to tell? -- Reid Ribble PS: I was right about Trump all along. Hope you are well and still love your work.
Wisconsinites, say hello to your former congressmen, Reid Ribble. He's a loyal "Ask Vic" reader and I had the pleasure of meeting him the day of the Packers at Redskins playoff game in January of 2016. As the story goes, the night before the game I got a call in my hotel room while I was watching the zany and delightfully vicious Steelers-Bengals playoff game. One of the Packers' executives called to say Congressman Ribble was in the lobby and wanted to meet me. At first, I thought it was a joke. Everybody knew it was my last season so I was thinking it was some kind of impromptu farewell. I was about to head out the door when the phone rang again; the meeting would happen the next day instead ... and it did. I got a message in the press box to come down to the sideline and meet the congressmen. It was one of the most flattering moments of my career. How could I ever be poor with memories like that? As for special teams and the defense, give them time. It was good to see Stokes make a play on the ball, and the defensive lineman from Florida looks very promising.
Ben from Chicago, IL
Should we be excited by Benkert's play?
If you're bored, sure.
Aiden from Jacksonville, FL
Observations from the Jags so far?
They were beyond disappointing on Monday night. I didn't see a nucleus around which the team might build. It's a complete rebuild. Urban Meyer is facing the greatest challenge of his coaching career.
Louis from Columbus, OH
Vic, can you explain what beat writers mean by "sneaking" someone onto the practice squad?
It means getting the player through waivers.
K.J. from Washington, MO
Were there any players you covered that were great in practice/preseason but never put it all together for the regular season?
From my time covering the Steelers, it was a running back named Jack Deloplaine. In Jacksonville, it was a wide receiver named Chad Owens. In Green Bay, it was linebacker Vic So'oto, who was a really cool guy and a good interview.
Chevin from Jacksonville, FL
Wow, the Jaguars are still really that bad right now, aren't they?
The 1995 expansion Jaguars would beat the Jaguars team I saw on Monday night.
Jack from Middleton, WI
What is an NFL futures contract?
Late in the season, may sign street free agents for when the season ends and rosters increase in size.
Tyler from Augusta, GA
What is your opinion of the social media ban on Donald Trump?
What is your opinion of me shutting down the comments section?
Clay from Council Bluffs, IA
How will the (alliance) of the ACC, PAC 12 and Big 10 impact college football down the road? Are you in favor of it?
The alliance is an effort to blunt the force of the SEC. I'm in favor of a central ruling body.
